Zimanga & the Chobe River Photo Safari - Sept 2027
South Africa & Botswana &
4 Spaces

Zimanga’s Iconic eye-level Hides and Wildlife of the Chobe River by boat

This small-group photographic safari combines two outstanding African wildlife experiences — 7 nights at Zimanga Private Game Reserve in South Africa and 3 nights on the iconic Chobe River in Botswana. You’ll begin with dedicated wildlife photography at Zimanga’s renowned sunken underground hides and open-vehicle game drives before flying to Botswana to explore the dynamic waterways of the Chobe River aboard the Pangolin Voyager Houseboat, with photo excursions from a specialised photo boat.

Travelling in the prime September season, when wildlife congregations are strong and light is exceptional, this itinerary is designed for photographers who appreciate diversity — from photographic hides, bushveld predators and plains game to large herds, waterway wildlife, and abundant birdlife.

Why This Safari Is Exceptional

Dedicated photographic hides and game drives — Zimanga’s innovative hide system allows intimate access to wildlife in natural settings, complemented by open-vehicle drives for broader scenes.

River-based photography along the Chobe River — With a specialised photo boat equipped with swivel seats and gimbal mounts, you’ll capture wildlife at water level, from elephants and hippos to prolific birdlife.

Small group, personalised guidance — Limited to just 6 participants with professional photo host, Mike Tilley and expert local guides, ensuring personalised support and creative freedom.

Two distinct environments in one safari — From South Africa’s bushveld hides to Botswana’s waterways, this combo delivers unmatched photographic variety.

A Day on Safari

At Zimanga, you’ll alternate between open vehicle drives and specialised hides, capturing subjects from eye-level perspectives to classic landscape scenes. On the Chobe River, morning and afternoon photo boat trips provide water-level access to wildlife and birdlife, with excellent light and reflections enhancing compositions. Across both environments, activities are timed for optimal light, with ample opportunities to rest, review images, and refine techniques.

About Your Photo Host & local guides

Your safari is led by Mike Tilley, a professional local photographic host who will collaborate with experienced guides and the photo boat captain to position you for compelling wildlife imagery. Together they bring deep local knowledge and technical insight to enhance your photographic success across both Zimanga and the Chobe River.

THE VICTORIA FALLS

David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European to view the falls on 16 November 1855. Livingstone named his sighting in honour of Queen Victoria, but the Sotho language name, Mosi-oa-Tunya "The Smoke That Thunders", continues in common usage. The World Heritage List officially recognises both names.

While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, the Victoria Falls are classified the largest, based on its combined width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water. The Victoria Falls are roughly twice the height of North America's Niagara Falls and well over twice its width.

The river that flows over the falls is the Zambezi. This is Africa's 4th longest river with its source in Zambia. It flows through 6 different countries before it empties into the Indian Ocean on Africa's East Coast.
