This small-group photographic safari combines two of Southern Africa’s most celebrated big cat destinations — Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana and MalaMala Private Game Reserve in South Africa.

Designed specifically for wildlife photographers, this itinerary delivers extended time in predator-rich environments, private photographic vehicles, and carefully paced game drives. Alongside outstanding lion, leopard, and cheetah encounters, you’ll also photograph elephants, plains game, birds, diverse African landscapes, and at MalaMala, a good chance of Cape hunting dogs.

With only three photographers in one vehicle, this safari prioritises space, flexibility, and creative freedom in the field, under expert guidance.

A Day on Safari MASHATU & MALAMALA

Each day begins before sunrise with game drives timed for soft morning light and peak wildlife activity. Mornings are ideal for locating active predators, while midday provides time to rest, review images, and recharge equipment.

Afternoon drives focus on golden-hour light, backlit subjects, and dynamic behaviour, returning after sunset. Throughout the day, Stu offers practical guidance on camera settings, composition, and creative approach to help you maximise every photographic opportunity.

Stu Porter has over two decades of experience leading and photographing wildlife safaris throughout Africa. His practical, supportive approach focuses on helping photographers translate exceptional sightings into strong, well-composed images through patience, positioning, and an understanding of animal behaviour.

As your dedicated photo host, Stu is present on every drive, offering continuous support, feedback, and creative input.

 

This Mashatu and MalaMala big cat photo safari is a small-group African wildlife photography tour led by Stu Porter, combining two legendary predator reserves with private vehicles and expert photographic guidance.

Day 1: Arrive in Johannesburg – Overnight

Arrive at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Our meet & greet team will escort you to the City Lodge, which is within easy walking distance, for an overnight stay. We will meet for dinner at the hotel.

Days 2–7: Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana

Fly to Polokwane, then road transfer to Botswana and on to Mashatu Game Reserve for six nights of intensive wildlife photography. Mashatu is renowned for its high predator density, large elephant herds, and striking riverine landscapes. Daily game drives focus on lions, leopards, cheetahs, and plains game, complemented by excellent birdlife.

Stu provides daily photographic guidance, helping you work with light, composition, and animal behaviour while refining your personal shooting style.

We will be staying at two different lodges on the reserve, starting with three nights at Tuli Lodge, followed by three nights at Mashatu Lodge.

We have also booked one afternoon photo hide session at the famous “Matebole Elephant Hide”

Day 8: Return to Johannesburg – Overnight

After a final morning activity at Mashatu, we transfer by road back to Polokwane and then fly back to Johannesburg. We overnight at City Lodge again. This will allow us to connect to MalaMala the following day.

Days 9–12: MalaMala Private Game Reserve

Fly to Skukuza and transfer to MalaMala Private Game Reserve for four nights. MalaMala is famous for its exceptional leopard sightings, strong lion populations, regular cheetah activity, and good sightings of Cape hunting dogs along the Sand River system.

Private photographic game drives allow extended time with subjects and precise positioning for optimal light and backgrounds. Stu works closely with the ranger to ensure you are consistently placed for the best photographic opportunities.

Day 13: Depart South Africa

Enjoy a final morning game drive before transferring to Skukuza Airport and connecting to Johannesburg for your international departure.

Step 2 – Get in Touch

Please contact us to confirm availability on your preferred safari by clicking the “Enquire Now” button.

You’re also welcome to request an obligation-free Zoom call to discuss your safari directly with me, Stu Porter, and ensure it’s the right fit for you.

Step 3 – Create Your Client Account

Once availability is confirmed and you’d like to proceed, we’ll email you a personalised, secure link to access our Client Area. Here, you’ll create your account and be directed to complete your online booking form.

Step 4 – Complete Your Booking Form

Please complete one booking form per participant. Once received, we’ll provisionally reserve your place, pending deposit payment.

Step 5 – Secure Your Place with a Deposit

A deposit is required to confirm your booking. The deposit amount varies depending on the safari and will be clearly advised before you commit.

Payments can be made securely by credit card (subject to a 5% handling fee) or by international bank transfer. Your place is confirmed once both your completed booking form and deposit have been received.

Step 6 – Final Balance Payment

After your deposit is received, your outstanding balance will be displayed in your Client Area. The final payment is due 90 days before departure, with reminders sent in advance.

For bookings made within 90 days of the safari start date, full payment will be required at the time of booking.
