Overview

This 14-day wildlife photographic safari hosted by Stu Porter, owner of Wild4 Photo Safaris, is designed for photographers seeking a relaxed Serengeti experience during the green season. Beginning with your arrival into Kilimanjaro, you’ll enjoy an overnight stay in Arusha before we journey into Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife region.

Our first three nights are spent in the central Serengeti at Naabi Hill, ideally positioned near the dramatic Gol Kopjes. These rocky outcrops rise from the plains and provide natural vantage points for predators, making this one of the best areas to photograph lions and cheetahs. Early morning and late afternoon game drives focus on golden light and clean compositions.

From here, we move south to Ndutu, where we spend nine nights exploring one of East Africa’s most diverse wildlife areas. Ndutu’s mix of open grasslands, soda lakes, acacia woodlands, and hidden valleys offers exceptional photographic variety. This safari is purposefully timed to avoid the peak tourist season, allowing us to work sightings patiently and maximise photographic opportunities.

After our time in Ndutu, we fly back to Kilimanjaro, bringing the safari to a close. Guests wishing to extend their experience can visit the Ngorongoro Crater on the return journey with a professional local driver-guide.

Stu’s approach is practical, supportive, and tailored to each guest. He believes strong images come from patience, positioning, and understanding behaviour.

By personally leading this safari, Stu ensures a calm, productive, and rewarding photographic experience.

Location

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK – GOL KOPJES

The Gol Kopjes are one of the Serengeti’s most iconic locations for photographic safaris in Tanzania. These granite outcrops rise from open plains, attracting lions and cheetahs that use them as vantage points. The surrounding short grass creates clean, uncluttered backgrounds, making this an exceptional area for big cat encounters and behaviour-focused wildlife photography.

NDUTU REGION – NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

Ndutu is one of East Africa’s most rewarding regions for wildlife photography safaris, with open grasslands, soda lakes, acacia woodlands, and hidden valleys. In April, wildlife activity remains strong with far fewer tourists than the busy calving season. Off-road driving allows precise positioning for better angles and backgrounds, creating high-quality photographic opportunities.

Photographers Per Vehicle

This safari is limited to just two photographers per vehicle, with a maximum of two vehicles. This is more exclusive than most photographic safaris, which typically operate with three guests per vehicle, allowing greater space, flexibility, and access to both sides.

Stu will rotate between vehicles, working closely with each driver-guide to assist with positioning and provide photographic support.

Vehicle Congestion

Vehicle congestion is expected to be very low. By selecting April, outside the main tourist season, we still enjoy strong wildlife activity with far fewer vehicles, allowing both us and the wildlife to relax at sightings and wait for natural behaviour to unfold.

Woodlands Camp – Naabi Hill

Woodlands Camp is ideally located near the Gol Kopjes, offering excellent access to resident lion prides and cheetah-rich plains.

The camp features comfortable en-suite tents with private verandas, along with a relaxed lounge and dining area. Meals are freshly prepared and served in an informal, welcoming setting.

Known for reliable service and a welcoming atmosphere, it is well suited to photographic safaris.

Weather

April is a rewarding time in the Serengeti and Ndutu, with lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and excellent photographic conditions. Mornings are typically clear and cool, offering soft light and active wildlife.

As the day progresses, storm clouds often build across the plains, with the chance of afternoon rain. These passing showers add atmosphere, enrich colours, and create striking backdrops.

With fresh air, low dust, and ever-changing light, April offers beautifully dynamic conditions for wildlife photography.

A Day On Safari

Each day begins before sunrise with a quick tea or coffee, before heading out in the cool morning when predators are still very active, taking full advantage of this and the beautiful early light.

We stay out in the field all morning, taking a packed breakfast with us. This gives us the flexibility to remain at good sightings or take a relaxed break under an acacia tree.

We usually return to camp around midday, unless we are in the middle of a potentially great sighting, such as cheetah hunting.

The middle of the day is spent resting, downloading images, charging equipment, and, if you’d like, reviewing your photos with Stu.

In the afternoon, we head back out as the light softens, returning just after sunset. Evenings are relaxed with dinner and optional image review.
