Great Migration Photo Safari Masai Mara - August 2023

August 14th - 22nd, 2023
Great Migration Photo Safari Masai Mara - August 2023
Kenya &
4 Spaces

OVERVIEW

This photo safari has been timed to coincide with the largest mammal migration on earth. Every year between July and October, the mega migration herds of over 1 million animals linger in the Masai Mara the feed on nutrient-rich grasses. But, by the end of October, the food source is diminished, and distant rains in the Serengeti pull the herds south, only to return at the same time the following year.

The sheer number of animals, dramatic river crossings through hippo and crocodile-infested waters, and the abundance of predators make this one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the natural world.

Our meet & greet service will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to a Nairobi hotel for a 1-night stopover.

The following morning, you will fly into the Masai Mara, where the camp staff will collect you from Olkiombo airstrip. You will have time to settle into your new surroundings and enjoy a delicious lunch overlooking the Mara River. You will meet at 4pm for your first afternoon game drive.

The camp has been carefully selected and is not far from some popular river crossing points, allowing you quick access to these photographic hotspots.

Each day will be spent looking for opportunities to photograph dramatic river crossings, exciting predator encounters, and the incredible variety of birdlife.

After a short game drive on your final morning, you will fly back to Nairobi. You will have access to a day room to freshen up before you depart later that same evening on your international flight home.

MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE

Gentle rolling hills, savanna grassland, riverine thickets, and the famous Mara River are some of the scenery highlights you will encounter in the Masai Mara. Covering 1500 square kilometres (560 square miles), this is one of the best locations for a photographic safari, right in the heart of authentic Africa.

The Masai Mara ranks as one of the best places to photograph Africa's big cats (Lion, Leopard and Cheetah). However, these are not the only residents. The sheer number of mammals, birds, and reptiles found here is astounding.

This is the time of year when the Great Migration mega herds are present. The rolling hills are covered with 1000's of migrating Wildebeest and Zebra that have come to the Mara to enjoy the bountiful grass it has to offer.

DETAILS

This small group photo safari allows for a tremendous amount of flexibility in the field. Packed breakfasts enjoyed either at sightings or under a typical Mara Picnic Tree are standard. You will maximize your time out in the Mara to allow the wildlife and the situations you find them in dictate the daily pace.

During the migration season, it is not uncommon to sit for hours waiting for the Wildebeest to cross the Mara River. Therefore, you will take packed food in the vehicles to enable you to remain in the field for as long as it takes.

This Great Migration Photo Safari will have a maximum of 6 participants in 3 private vehicles (2 participants per vehicle). There is plenty of space for equipment and guaranteed access to both sides of the safari vehicle.

Mamai John will lead this photo tour.

There is no specific photographic tuition on this safari, making it best suited for intermediate to advanced photographers who are confident with their photography skills.

Our professional and experienced safari guides will locate the wildlife and position the vehicle correctly, considering the light and distance to the subject.

You will have an excellent chance to see and photograph the following animals on this safari:

Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Black Rhino, Spotted Hyena, Jackal, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Thompson's Gazelle, Grant's Gazelle, Olive Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Coke's Hartebeest, and an excellent variety of reptile and birdlife.
