Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti & Ndutu - March 2023

March 01st - 17th, 2023
Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti & Ndutu - March 2023
Kenya & Tanzania &
4 Spaces

OVERVIEW

This cleverly planned itinerary visits Kenya's Amboseli National Park, famous for its large herds of Elephants and the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. You then cross over into Tanzania, where you will visit three incredibly diverse and photo productive locations: The Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and the Ndutu area.

A special bonus of this safari is that the Great Migration will be present in all three of these stunning Tanzanian locations. The herds give birth here, and the predators follow them.

You will make use of ground transportation for the entire safari. Driving means you will not need to rely on expensive air transfers with unrealistic luggage allowances for photographers. You will also avoid wasting time by not arriving early to check in or deal with potential flight delays, which are common in Tanzania.

Driving is hassle-free and solves all luggage issues. The roads used are in good condition, and this option allows you to experience driving through the local countryside. Before you leave each location, you will still have a morning drive and will not miss the most productive times for photography.

Our meet and greet service will welcome you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. You will transfer to a Nairobi hotel for an overnight stop. The following morning you will depart on a road transfer to Amboseli National Park, where we will spend three nights.

You then travel by road to the Namanga border post and cross over into Tanzania. Here we meet up with our Tanzanian guides and vehicles and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater arriving at our lodge in the late afternoon. We spend two nights here.

Our next destination is the Serengeti National Park, where we will spend three nights in the heart of the reserve.

Finally, we head to the Ndutu area, where we will spend six nights.

The journey back to Nairobi will include an overnight stop in Arusha.

From Arusha, we cross back into Kenya via the Namanga border and reach Nairobi in the early afternoon. You will enjoy the use of a day room at a hotel close to the airport. Later that same evening, you will take the complimentary shuttle service to catch your international flight home.

AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK - KENYA

Gazetted as a national park in 1974, the core of Amboseli is 392 square kilometres (151 square miles) in size. However, it is part of a larger 8,000 square kilometre (3,100 square mile) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border.

The park protects two of five primary swamps, which are a haven for mammals and birds. It also includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake known as Lake Amboseli. It is the second most popular wildlife park in Kenya after the Masai Mara.

The park is famous for being the best place in the world to get close to wild, free-ranging elephants. It also boasts views of Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 m (19,341 ft). This is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular backdrops of any park in Africa.

The iconic image of a herd of Elephants with the snow-capped mountain in the background is high on our list.

NGORONGORO CRATER - TANZANIA

The Ngorongoro Crater is believed to have formed about 2.5 million years ago from a large active volcano whose cone collapsed inward after a major eruption. It is 264 square kilometres (102 square miles) in size. The rim rises 610 metres (2000 feet) above the caldera's floor to a total elevation of 2,286 metres (7,500 feet) above sea level.

The crater was incorporated into the Ngorongoro Conservation area in 1959 and included within a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

The crater's floor is dominated by open grassland and is home to an astounding number and array of animals. It has the densest population of lions in the world. The shallow soda Lake Magadi is home to thousands of pink flamingos.

It is one of the most spectacular destinations in Africa, with ever-changing weather patterns and fantastic cloud formations that pour over the rim like massive waves.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK - TANZANIA

Formed as a national park in 1951, the Serengeti (from the Maasai word "Siringet" meaning "the place where the land goes on forever") is a 14,750 square kilometre (5,700 square mile) reserve. It is part of a much larger 30,000 square kilometre (11,583 square mile) ecosystem and is the flagship of Tanzania's 19 national parks.

It is home to the largest population of Lions in Africa at around 3000 and the largest migratory herd of animals left on earth. The Great Migration moves with the seasons in a clockwise rotational system. In Feb/March, the mega herds congregate on the short grass plains around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area.

The migration is just one of many amazing things in the Serengeti. The reserve is also home to hills, valleys, lakes, rivers, woodlands and short grass plains dotted with rocky granite outcrops known as "kopjes."

The Serengeti is a photographers paradise.

NDUTU AREA - TANZANIA

The Ndutu area offers fantastic wildlife viewing and photography all year round. During February and March every year, it is home to thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra as they arrive to give birth. The food and water at this time of year are plentiful. The woodland areas surrounding the two saline lakes of Lake Masek and Lake Ndutu provide excellent shelter.

Ndutu lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and off-road driving is permitted here. This is a massive benefit to photographers who can explore many different areas. It also makes it easier to position the vehicle for the best light, angle and distance to the subject.

The abundance of young animals at this specific time of year means the resident and nomadic predators are very active. It is, without a doubt, one of the best places in Africa to photograph Lions and Cheetahs.
