Mala Mala is the oldest private game reserve in South Africa, and the place where award-winning National Geographic wildlife documentaries have been filmed, such as "Beauty and the Beast", “Predators at War", and "Tjololo the Leopard".
At Mala Mala, our main aim will be to track down and spend quality time with the reserve's wild Lions and Leopards. This is one of the best places in the world to see these cats and offers unrivalled photo opportunities. At Mala Mala, we will also have the opportunity to go in search of the predators at night. All of the skills of low-light photography and how to capture the nocturnal world will be explained by Stu, offering a different set of experiences and photos.
A long stay of 10 nights will allow plenty of time to relax and settle into a routine. Early morning, afternoon and night photo game drives will be on offer every day and we will get to explore all areas of this amazing piece of wilderness. Mala Mala is a picturesque reserve with the jewel being the beautiful Sand River. At this time of year, the river acts as a magnet drawing in a variety of thirsty herbivores and of course the predators will be there waiting for them. The middle of the dry season is the best time to be at Mala Mala and over our 11 days, we will have an incredible experience filled with amazing photo opportunities.
At the discretion of our well-trained ranger, we will drive off-road to follow animals or to get a better angle for light. Of course, our focus will be on the Cats, but this reserve is full of many other mammals as well as a fantastic collection of birds, which we will also take time to photograph.
MalaMala is the ultimate place to enjoy a relaxed photographic safari experience, with luxurious accommodation and excellent cuisine.
Stu will lead the tour and offer photographic assistance and guidance.
This is our most exclusive small-group photo safari with a maximum of 3 participants in 1 private vehicle. There is plenty of space for equipment and guaranteed access to both sides of the safari vehicle.
Each photographer will have the complimentary use of a Visual Echoes panning plate.
WILD4 PLAT4ORMS, our own specially designed photo bars will attach to the vehicle we use at Mala Mala. These bars offer a very stable shooting platform. (for more information, please see the photos in the "TRANSPORT and LODGING" tab).
At the end of the safari, you will fly from Skukuza Airport back to Johannesburg, arriving in time to catch your international flight home later that same evening.
** VICTORIA FALLS EXTENSION ** the opportunity to visit the famous Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is also available to add on to the beginning or end of this photo tour. Please click on the EXTENSION TAB for more details.

When two photo trips organised by my tour operator were cancelled. I looked around and found Wild4. Justyna was extremely helpful in putting together a tailor made tour just for me. I opted for 8 nights Kruger, 2 nights Big Cats & the Reptile extension. Some emails later and all was booked and paid for. I tend to shy away from flash but as we were doing a night shoot at the Big Cat Reserve, I quickly learned a great new technique and the photographs turned out wonderful. In short, Wild4 Photographic Safaris is the one you want to book with to get the best opportunities. This is not the last time I will make use of their services. Thank you Justyna & Stu for a wonderful time.

It has always been a dream of mine to travel to Africa and take a photo safari. Although I am not a professional photographer, it has been a hobby of mine and I had been wanting to make the trip for many years. Last year, I went on a safari through a different agency, and was disappointed. It was too generic and commercialized. It left me unsatisfied and wanting more. After a year, I still had an urge to go back to Africa and get the experience that I felt I had missed out on. After doing some research I came upon Wild 4 African Photographic Safaris. I was excited that this time I would really get the experience I was hoping for, and it did not fail. Upon arrival at the park, I met Stu. He was extremely helpful, even months before the trip. Justyna helped me prepare and made sure I was well equipped for the safari. Before arriving, I could already tell that this would be an adventure of a lifetime. During the safari, Stu’s knowledge continued to surprise me. Not only does he know about photography, but his familiarity of the animals and their environment is unbelievable. He could spot a rhino from miles away that we would only see once he drove 5 minutes towards it. He understands the environment and how to get great shots. He never let us miss an opportunity. Stu was patient and didn’t rush us. His tips were useful and will help with all of my future photography endeavours. The Wild 4 Safari at went above and beyond all of my expectations. It really was a dream come true.
