Shompole hide and Mashatu Photo Safari - May/June 2026
Overview
This 16-day Shompole and Mashatu photo safari combines two very different, yet highly complementary, wildlife photography experiences across Kenya and Botswana.
At Shompole in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, the focus is on eye-level hide photography, including overnight stays in purpose-built underground hides. Here, you’ll work with soft afternoon light, early morning activity, and productive nocturnal sessions, capturing natural behaviour from a low, undisturbed perspective.
The safari then shifts to Mashatu, where private game drives are combined with additional hide sessions. Known for its big cats, elephants, and open landscapes, Mashatu offers excellent opportunities to work with light, positioning, and behaviour across a range of environments.
With just a small group and guidance from Stu Porter, this safari is designed for photographers who value time at sightings, patience, and the ability to create strong, thoughtful wildlife images.

Location
SHOMPOLE OVERNIGHT HIDES (KENYA)
Located in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, Shompole delivers a unique, hide-based photography experience. Its purpose-built underground hides operate at eye level, attracting wildlife directly to the water’s edge. Regular sightings include lions, leopards, hyenas, plains game, and a range of nocturnal species. With open landscapes, striking light, and long sessions in the hides, it’s an exceptional setting for close, intimate wildlife images.
MASHATU GAME RESERVE (BOTSWANA)
Located in Botswana’s Northern Tuli Game Reserve, Mashatu is known for consistent predator sightings and large elephant herds. Open landscapes, riverbeds, and sandstone ridges provide clean backgrounds and excellent light. Combining private game drives with well-positioned hides, Mashatu offers strong opportunities to work patiently with behaviour, while off-road driving allows for precise positioning and carefully selected backgrounds.

FAQ
- What level of photography experience is required?
This safari is suitable for enthusiastic beginners through to advanced photographers. You should be comfortable with your camera, but Stu will provide guidance on settings, composition, and field technique throughout the trip.
- What are the luggage restrictions for internal flights?
Internal flights have strict luggage limits. Main luggage is limited to 20kg (44 lbs) per person, plus 15kg (33 lbs) for camera gear. Bags must be soft duffel or roller-style. Please note that ** HARD SUITCASES ARE NOT PERMITTED. Keeping weight within limits is essential for safety and compliance.
- Are there other activities at Shompole, and can I skip a night in the hides?
The main focus at Shompole is time spent in the overnight hides, which offer the best photographic opportunities. However, a scenic helicopter flight over Lake Natron and the flamingos can be arranged at an additional cost—please enquire for more details. If you prefer not to spend every night in the hides, you are welcome to stay at camp instead.
- What are the underground hides like, and what facilities do they have?
The Shompole underground hides blend comfort with high-end photography. Each hide features a "quiet" shooting area and a rear section with beds, a small kitchen, and a flush toilet.
Unlike other African hides, Shompole’s open-front design has no glass, ensuring razor-sharp images while heightening your connection to the sounds and scents of the bush. For safety, you must remain inside overnight. Soft lighting illuminates the wildlife, and beanbags are provided for support. Flash photography is not permitted.
- Do I need special equipment to photograph at night?
Yes, having the right gear makes a big difference for night photography. Fast lenses (f/2.8) are highly recommended, with primes like a 300mm or 400mm working particularly well, along with a 70–200mm f/2.8. A wider lens in the 15–35mm range is also useful. It’s a great setting to try time-lapse photography, so a small tripod for your phone can be handy.
- What wildlife might I see on this photo safari to Botswana, Kenya & Zambia?
